Boise State biologist Jesse Barber placed a half-mile corridor of speakers on an Idaho ridge playing looped recordings of traffic noise. A third of the migrating birds left. Those that stayed spent more time scanning for predators and less time feeding, and they put on less weight for their migration. Noise alone — detached from vehicles, exhaust, and pavement — was enough to degrade the habitat.
