SHIST
Layered metamorphic rock that splits along planes of mica — the pages of a stone book, each layer representing a chapter of heat and pressure. Schist sparkles in the sun because of the mica crystals aligned through its structure.
Etymology
Greek: schistos (split, divided), from schizein (to split). The rock that divides.
