spark
SPARK
A small, glowing particle thrown off by a fire or generated by friction — a fragment of combustion, briefly alive, dying as it flies. Also: the initial discharge that ignites a larger flame. The word carries both meanings simultaneously: the tiny thing, and the beginning of everything.
Etymology
Old English spearca, from Proto-Germanic *sparkōn. Related to Old Norse sparkr (sprightly) and Middle Low German sparke.
