pewter
PYOO-ter
A dull, silver-gray color — the color of overcast sky reflected in still water, of lichen on granite, of old tin. In material terms, pewter is a tin alloy, but the word lives more powerfully as a color: the pewter light of a winter afternoon, the pewter surface of a lake before rain. It is the color of metal tired of shining.
Etymology
Old French peutre, peutre, of uncertain origin. Possibly from a Romance language root related to tin, or from an unattested Vulgar Latin form.
