water sky
A dark patch on the underside of cloud cover that indicates open water below, visible from a distance across ice. Arctic navigators read the sky as a map of the surface — water sky is dark; ice blink, its opposite, is bright. The clouds become a mirror, and the navigator reads the reflection.
Etymology
“Water” from Old English “wæter”; “sky” from Old Norse “ský” (cloud). Compound term from polar exploration and Arctic/Antarctic maritime usage, describing the dark reflection open water casts on the underside of clouds — a navigational cue long used by sailors and Indigenous Arctic peoples to detect open leads in sea ice from a distance.
