BARK
The outer skin of a tree — dead on the outside, alive underneath. Bark insulates against fire, repels insects, prevents water loss, and records the history of every wound and season the tree has survived. No two species wear it the same way.
Etymology
Middle English barke, from Old Norse börkr. Related to birch, whose bark was the original writing surface of the north.
