ciénega

A marshy, spring-fed wetland in the arid Southwest — a permanently saturated area where groundwater reaches the surface and supports dense growth of sedges, rushes, and grasses in an otherwise dry landscape. Ciénegas are ecological oases, supporting species found nowhere else in the surrounding desert.
