zoomies
ZOO-meez
A sudden burst of frantic, directionless running in a dog or cat — technically called frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs). The animal tears through the house or yard at maximum speed, changes direction violently, and stops as abruptly as it started. Zoomies are a discharge of excess energy and appear to be pure, uncomplicated joy.
Etymology
English slang, from zoom + -ies. In widespread use among pet owners since the 2010s. The veterinary term FRAP was coined later to describe the same behavior more clinically.
