bergschrund
A deep crevasse that forms where a glacier pulls away from the headwall of a mountain. Often the last major obstacle before a summit push, and sometimes impassable. Leaping one on a ski descent is one of the radder feelings I know.
Etymology
German — berg (mountain) + schrund (crack, cleft). The word carries a sense of severance, the mountain tearing itself apart.
