Prusik
PROO-sik
A friction hitch used to ascend a rope — a loop of thin cord wrapped around a thicker rope that grips under load but slides freely when unweighted. The Prusik lets a climber climb the rope itself.
Etymology
Named for Karl Prusik, the Austrian mountaineer who devised the knot in 1931.
